A Meal to Remember Near the Temple of Garni
Walking around the ancient columns of the Garni temple works up quite an appetite. Most visitors usually grab something quick near the main gates. But if you take a short five minute trip down the road, you step into a completely different world. Sari Zard caught my eye immediately with its striking architecture. The building itself is beautiful and feels incredibly grounded in the surrounding landscape. I walked in expecting a simple lunch and ended up staying for hours.
A Warm Welcome
The people working here are genuinely wonderful. Before I even had a chance to look at the menu, they brought over a complimentary plate of fresh seasonal fruits. It is a very small gesture, but it instantly makes you feel like an invited guest rather than just a customer. The interior design is stunning without trying too hard. You can tell they care about the details because even the plates and cutlery are gorgeous. Playing in the background is this fantastic mix of traditional Armenian music with modern beats. It creates an atmosphere that is deeply relaxing but still full of life.
The Local Menu
I wanted to try a bit of everything and the food completely blew me away. The lamb BBQ was a major highlight. It had that perfect smoky char on the outside while staying ridiculously tender on the inside. We also tried their signature pitas. The pita with ghavurma and tomatoes was incredibly rich, and the meat just melted in my mouth. We balanced it out with a pita filled with cheese and greens, which was super fresh and bright.
Every plate felt authentic. The chi kufta wrapped in green leaves was completely unique and tasted like pure comfort food. The green beans cooked with veal and tomatoes felt like a cherished family recipe passed down through generations. We rounded out the meal with some cold aubergine rolls and a bowl of mountain sorrel soup. Every single bite made sense for a restaurant sitting out here in the mountains.
Cocktails and the Lucky Plate
Sari Zard is definitely not just a place to grab food. It is honestly an amazing spot to just sit back and have cocktails. The drinks are beautiful and they hit the spot perfectly after a long day of sightseeing. If you want to make your visit even more memorable, you have to ask about their Lucky Plate concept. They organize these private tasting invitations featuring custom labeled local Armenian wine. It is a brilliant idea if you are celebrating something special or just want a deeper look at the local food culture.
Why You Should Go
If you are planning a trip out to Garni, do yourself a huge favor and make time for this place. Between the beautiful aesthetic, the amazing dishes, and the incredibly kind staff, it is worth the drive all on its own. You might come out here for the history, but you will definitely want to linger for the food.
